in Bolton and Salford ArchDeaconries (last updated 25/2/15)
The list of projects below make up some of the work of the Young Adults Missioner (YAM) for Bolton & Salford ArchDeaconries. They fall into three categories:
1) Growing Leaders 2) Missional Communities Model 3) Attractional Church Model
GROWING LEADERS
1. New Wine Discipleship Year Bolton Training Centre
Having interns working in local churches and Christian charities is a central plank of the strategy for reaching young adults as it is both developing young leaders and enabling them in ministry to young adults
In November 2013 we started our Discipleship Year Bolton Training Centre. Since then we have had 30 graduates with another 5 starting in October 2016.
We meet at Bolton Parish Church Hall, BL1 1PS.
Click here for an overview of the Curriculum which runs in term time over from October to July. 75% of the lectures are delivered by DVD and the rest by local speakers. The course is fantastic! In February we meet up with the other 13 centres from around England.
We need:
Funding to provide bursaries (£100-200) for student fees who cannot find all their funding (some of our students live on very small incomes whilst giving their year in amazing service). We also need contributions to help with our Training Centre running costs.

2. Support for Young Adult Champions
Across Bolton and Salford ArchDeaconries there are over 130 churches with varying ministries to young adults (aged 18-40). For example St Aidans, Salford has started a Messy Church which reaches many new parents with young children. St Peter's Halliwell has started men's football which reaches young men from the centre and fringe of the church. No matter what age you are, you can help champion ministry to young adults in some form.
The YAM for Bolton and Salford currently networks with over 100 "champions" of ministry to young adults. The YAM aims to offer support to equip people of all ages to champion the ministry to young adults. This might involve collaboration on a plan for ministry and outreach, or growing in leadership skills through encouragement, courses, events and retreats (as pictured here).

We need:
Funding to help cover costs of mentoring and supporting champions. Sometimes they need to have a coffee bought for them as they share their current challenges, at other times it's a funded course which their local church or they cannot really afford to pay for themselves. MISSIONAL COMMUNITIES MODEL
1. Caring for Ex-offenders (CFEO) in Salford and Bolton
The majority of prison terms served are for less than 12 months which means there is no probation provision for them on release to help them in their rehabilitation.
In November 2013 we started our first CFEO group at St Aidans Church, Salford, working with Street Soccer. We have about 15 young men in this group with new people joining regularly. We have developed a personal development course called Fit4Life and a work rehabilitation programme which includes working on an allotment project.
In October 2014 we started a new CFEO group at St Chads Church serving the Bolton area, using the same model, but with its own dedicated team.
During 2015-16 we have been exploring expanding this work from 2 to 14 centres around Greater Manchester with the collaboration of a national probation partnership.
We need:
Funding to cover travel expenses and materials for a growing network of mentors who give their time to provide a range of mentored work experiences. This includes projects such as working on the St Aidans allotment to working on a house refurbishment project.
Whilst some start-up grants have been received for this work, funds are needed for the long term running of this work.
Mentors -If you feel you could offer some time as a one off or more regularly to help mentor a young adult in work, please do get in touch so we can discuss how that might work.
Contact: markcowling@manchester.anglican.org or see CFEO.
2. Bolton Wanderers Football Club -Faith Family Football
15,000 typically attend home games at Bolton Wanderers FC. Started in 1870s by Rev Ogden and Rev Farrell-Wright, the club has a strong commitment to the local community through the Trust and the club Chaplain Phil Mason.

Over 100,000 students live in Gtr Manchester and in some of our inner city parishes over 70% of the population is made of young professionals. Less than 1% of these groups attend a church, however podcasts marketed to this agegroup can be a successful way to connect with this audience.
A new FREE podcast has been launched which aims to connect with the young adult audience that has a spiritual appetite but does not attend church. It aims to interview people who are actively bringing "a shalom movement to the streets of Manchester" and encourage others to join in with the movement.

4. Bolton Third Space
Inspiring, uniting and supporting young people to live healthy and fulfilled lives.
The new focus is a mission that has a base in a central Bolton cafe (next door to CLC bookshop) as well as a schools mission team which will offer a range of services to meet the needs of secondary schools and students across Bolton.
The cafe is open to the public 9.30am-3.30pm and then run youth and young adult sessions in the evenings and on Sunday in due course.
Other work has been with a volunteer team in the grounds of Bolton Parish Church reaching out to teenagers and early 20s who hang out there. A summer festival has been held annually since 2014, open mic nights are run every 4 months more events are being planned.

5. Universities

The YAM has links with Salford University and is a volunteer Chaplain at Bolton University.

ATTRACTIONAL CHURCH MODEL
The logo here illustrates the five pillars that are recommended for reaching out to young adults from an Attractional Church i.e. the local parish church. There's more info on the YAM website www.mark1830.blogspot.com
